ITINERARY
FRIDAY 23RD JULY
After pick up from your local departure point we drive to Dublin for the ferry to Holyhead and on to our hotel in Solihull with plenty of time to relax before dinner. (Dinner, B&B)
SATURDAY 24TH JULY
Enjoy a full English breakfast and then we set off to Charlecote Park, home of the Lucy family for more than 700 years. The Tudor house with its mellow stonework and ornate chimneys has strong associations with both Queen Elizabeth I and Shakespeare, who knew the house well – he is alleged to have been caught poaching the estate deer. The house’s Victorian interior contains an extensive portrait collection and the balustraded formal garden, landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown, opens on to a fine deer park overlooking the River Avon. This afternoon we continue to Warwick Castle, arguably Britain’s finest. History will come to life as we explore the castle and its grounds. The Georgian State Rooms and Great Hall are well worth a visit. We return to the hotel late afternoon. (Dinner, B&B)
SUNDAY 25TH JULY
Today we head to the lovely Warwickshire town of Stratfordupon- Avon where William Shakespeare was born in 1564. We visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace – a half-timbered house in the town centre – to discover the exciting story of his early years. The Birthplace contains an acclaimed exhibition of his life and background, as well as many period furnishings, manuscriptsand books. After time to explore this quintessentially English town we visit Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in the tiny hamlet of Shottery. This most picturesque thatched “cottage”, actually a twelve-roomed Elizabethan farmhouse, is justifiably described as one of England’s most famous buildings and was Anne’s home until she married Shakespeare in 1582. Its charmingsetting and interior is a delight to visitors of all ages. Return tothe hotel for dinner. (Dinner, B&B)
MONDAY 26TH JULY
After breakfast we drive northwards for the return ferry from Holyhead. After disembarking in Dublin we return you to your original pick up point. |
