ITINERARY
MONDAY 30TH AUGUST
Depart from your local pick up point, then we drive to Belfast for the 12.15hrs ferry to Stranraer. Our journey continues, via an orientation tour of Glasgow, to Edinburgh where we stay for the next two nights. (Dinner, B&B)
TUESDAY 31ST AUGUST
We meet our local guide for an Edinburgh sightseeing tour taking in both the old city and the new (built in 1719!). We pass the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Royal Mile before an included guided visit of Edinburgh Castle with its Scottish Crown Jewels exhibition and the famous Stone of Scone. The afternoon is free to shop on Princes Street or to explore the many museums and galleries. Return to the hotel for dinner. Maybe later attend an optional Scottish evening of music, song and dance with a taste of haggis! (Dinner, B&B)
WEDNESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER
We check out of the hotel this morning and travel north across the Firth of Forth and the Queensferry Bridge. We head to Dundee for a refreshment stop at Discovery Point where the famous ship ‘Discovery’ that carried Ireland’s Tom Crean with the Scott Antarctica Expedition is on display. We continue to Royal Deeside for a lunch stop in the village of Braemar, home of the Highland Games and close to Balmoral Castle. Later we stop in Grantown-on-Spey, famous for Scottish whisky, before arriving at our hotel at the foot of the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains in Aviemore. (Dinner, B&B)
THURSDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER
After a late breakfast we drive towards Inverness, capital of the Highlands. First we visit Culloden Battlefield where the last battle on British soil was fought in 1746. British government troops defeated Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite Highland Army in a short but very bloody battle here. Next we make a of Inverness. Watch the distillers at work creating a magical malt whisky and there is also a well-stocked shop with a fine array of Scotch malt whiskies to choose from. The remainder of the afternoon is free in Inverness. Perhaps visit the Kilt Shop, one of the most famous in the world. (Dinner, B&B)
FRIDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER
Today is our chance to spot Nessie as we travel south and make a stop at Drumnadrochit where the Loch Ness Centre is located. A lovely drive along the banks of Loch Ness follows, through the pretty villages of Fort Augustus and Invergarry, to Fort William where we stop for lunch at the foot of Ben Nevis. Time to relax and admire the stunning scenery before we continue through Glen Coe, site of the infamous 1692 massacre in which 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed by government soldiers led by the Campbells. We continue to Glasgow for our overnight stay. (Dinner, B&B)
SATURDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER
We leave Glasgow and make our way via Alloway (home of Robbie Burns), the Heads of Ayr and the Electric Brae to Stranraer for the mid-afternoon ferry to Belfast. After disembarking we transfer you to your original pick up point. |
