WEDNESDAY 30TH JUNE
A local guide joins us this morning for a city sightseeing tour. Pamplona, the capital of the Navarra region, is famous worldwide for its annual bull-running festival. Ernest Hemingway loved the city – his book ‘The Sun Also Rises’ was set here and features this event. We see the 16th century town walls, the Plaza de Toros bullring, and the elegant tree-lined Plaza de Castillo where bullfights took place until 1893. Nowadays, this square is surrounded by restaurants and cafes and is a popular meeting place in the heart of the old town. We also see the fine Gothic cathedral and the Town Hall with its Baroque façade. This afternoon you may wish to take a stroll in beautiful Tejera Park or simply to explore further. Pamplona’s hidden corners full of charm and history mean that the best way to discover it is on foot. (Dinner, B&B)

THURSDAY 1ST JULY
Today we head out to the region of La Rioja, one of Spain’s most famous wine producing areas. This very fertile part of Spain is rich in natural resources and has an abundant supply of water due to the seven major rivers that flow through it. As well as an interesting landscape the region has an important historical heritage. The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James) pilgrimage route leads right through La Rioja and through its capital city, Logroño. During the day we will explore this fascinating area and visit a typical bodega to taste some local wines. We return to the hotel for dinner. (Dinner, B&B)
