SUGGESTED ITINERARY
DAY 1
Depart from school by coach, and head northwards for a stop at the site of the Battle of the Boyne. Your qualified driver or group leader will conduct a guided tour. Visit the World Heritage Site at Newgrange or Knowth to see the Stone Age Passage Tombs, or Ireland’s Celtic Capital, the Hill of Tara. Continue to Belfast for a 3 night stay on the outskirts of the city.
DAY 2
Enjoy a detailed guided city tour to discover the regenerated City of Belfast. See East and West Belfast, City Hall and the Shipyard and learn how the divide between the two communities is healing. This afternoon see the new Odyssey Building, the Titanic Quarter and maybe visit the 3D IMAX Cinema. Tonight perhaps watch the amazing Belfast Giants in an icehockey game at the Arena.
DAY 3
Start early this morning with a drive up the Antrim Coast to Carrickfergus Castle. Tour this impressive Norman stronghold built by John de Courcy before continuing to Northern Ireland’s most famous site - the Giant’s Causeway. This unique geological basalt formation is 60 million years old - but was it created by an earthquake, or by the giant, Finn MacCool? Travel onwards to Derry City for a walking tour of the walls with a local guide before returning to the hotel.
DAY 4
Drive along the Ards Peninsula and take the ferry from Portadown to Strangford. In Downpatrick visit the Saint Patrick Centre - the only permanent exhibition in the world dedicated to Ireland’s Patron Saint. The Centre provides a cutting edge interactive exhibition about the life and legacy of Patrick. Finally, return to school via Dundalk.
