SUGGESTED ITINERARY
DAY 1
Fly from Dublin direct to Krakow. Transfer to a centrally located hotel with dinner on arrival.
DAY 2
Meet a local guide this morning for a fascinating half day city tour. Highlights will include the Wawel Castle area, St Mary’s Church, Wawel Cathedral and the vast ‘Rynek’, Europe’s largest market square. In the afternoon depart by coach for a guided tour of the fabulous Wieliczka Salt Mines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Descend by lift for a 2km walk through the underground tunnels, seeing chambers and chapels carved by the miners over the centuries. Even the amazing chandeliers and murals are carved from salt! Dinner this evening will be in a traditional local restaurant in Krakow’s Old Town.
DAY 3
A full day tour to the former Nazi German Concentration Camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. An introductory film will be followed by a tour of the camp with audio-guides, as well as a local guide to answer questions and offer more detailed explanations. There will be some free time after returning to Krakow, then tonight’s dinner will be at a restaurant in the former Jewish Quarter of Kazimierz. An optional Jewish ‘Klezmer’ music performance may be arranged during the meal.
DAY 4
An early start for the drive south to Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains. En route perhaps stop for optional rafting on the Dunajec River through the Pieninski National Park. A city sightseeing tour of Zakopane will be followed by a funicular ride up Gubalowka Hill for a panoramic view of the High Tatra Mountains. Return to Krakow for dinner at the hotel.
DAY 5
If time permits before departure, visit Krakow’s industrial suburb of Nowa Huta, once a separate city. This Orwellian settlement was one of only two entirely pre-planned Soviet Cities ever built and is centred around the vast steelworks. After a glimpse of this Communist era conurbation, transfer to the airport for the fl ight home.
