SUGGESTED ITINERARY

DAY 1
Depart Dublin to Heathrow Airport for fl ight to Reykjavik. On arrival, transfer to Reykjavik Youth Hostel with an English speaking assistant.

DAY 2
Today’s exciting excursion with a local guide will fi rst visit the Hellisheidi Power Station for a tour and talk. Then travel to Gullfoss or “Golden Falls”. With a 105-foot double cascade, Gullfoss is by far Europe’s most powerful waterfall located in the canyon of the Hvita river. The next stop will be Pingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk along the rift valley to see the site of the ancient Viking parliament and the water-fi lled tectonic plates. Finally, visit the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, located in a lava fi eld in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, to enjoy a swim in the mineral rich warm waters. Return to the hostel in time for dinner.

DAY 3
Enjoy a full day Guided Tour to include Seljalandsfoss for a walk behind the spectacular waterfall and along to another striking waterfall, Gljufurarfoss. Continue to Skogar where there is an interesting open air folk museum and another waterfall to explore. Then, drive to the Solheimajokull Glacier, a moonscape ofice and rocks, and the Myrdalsjokull Ice Cap which sits on top of one of Iceland’s largest and most active subglacial volcanoes. Accommodation tonight is a Youth Hostel in the Vik area.

DAY 4
Set off with the guide this morning for Reynishverfi and a walk along the shoreline seeing some impressive basalt columns. Then to Dyrholaey which has a wonderful beach of black basalt sand and a natural rock arch. If possible, visit the lighthouse perched on Dyrholaey’s precipitous 120 m high promontory. This is the southernmost point of the Icelandic mainland. The last stop is Hveragerdi, town of horticulture and greenhouses. The thermal area in the centre of town was harnessed to heat both greenhouses and dwellings and, with the installation of artifi cial lighting, farmers have now prolonged the growing season to avoid importing flowers, fruit and vegetables during the winter months. Return to the Reykjavik Youth Hostel this evening.

DAY 5
Transfer to the airport for the return flight home.
