SUGGESTED ITINERARY

DAY 1
Fly from Dublin direct to Pisa. Pick up by coach from the airport then time to visit Pisa’s city centre and the famous Piazza dei Miracoli with its amazing Leaning Tower, the Baptistry and Cathedral. Continue to hotel on the outskirts of Florence.

DAY 2
The city centre of Florence is a treasure-trove of art and architecture. After a coach transfer, stopping at Piazzale Michelangelo to see a replica of Michelangelo’s David and to admire the stunning panorama of the city below, a local guide will accompany the group on a walking tour of the main sights. See the Duomo (Cathedral), Giotto’s Belltower and Ghiberti’s ‘gates of paradise’ bronze doors on the Baptistry. Visit the Accademia to marvel at Michelangelo’s original David then continue to Piazza della Signoria with its statues and beautiful buildings. Finally visit Santa Croce church, inside which are the tombs of some of the most illustrious fi gures in Italian history - including Michelangelo, Dante, Galileo and Rossini. The afternoon is at leisure to perhaps visit the marvellous Uffi zi Gallery or the Pitti Palace, to stroll across the Ponte Vecchio spanning the River Arno with its jewellery and gold shops, or simply to shop - leather goods are a speciality.

DAY 3
Enjoy a full day excursion by coach to Rome. An early start will allow for maximum time in Italy’s Capital City to see the Colosseum and Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and of course the Vatican City and St Peter’s Basilica. A local guide will point out the major sites before time at leisure for further exploration. Return to the hotel late this evening. Alternatively, stay closer to Florence with a tour to the lovely Medieval City of Lucca, whose ancient walls still surround the centre with its charming streets, churches and cathedral. Then drive to Vinci, hometown of Leonardo, and visit the Leonardo Museum containing fascinating models of the machines inspired by his amazing designs.

DAY 4
Art groups will probably appreciate a second full day to further discover all that Florence has to offer. Alternatively, we can arrange a tour through the lovely Tuscan countryside to Siena and San Gimignano. Siena is famous for the exciting ‘Palio’ horse-race that takes place in the city centre every summer. It abounds in Gothic architecture with a fine cathedral and many palaces. The walled Medieval City of San Gimignano is one of the most picturesque in Italy. In its heyday, the town boasted 72 stone towers overlooking the surrounding landscape. Today only 15 remain, however the city is full of charm and character, with many shops selling local Tuscan delicacies and wine.

DAY 5
Depart by coach for the airport and the return fl ight to Dublin.
