SUGGESTED ITINERARY
DAY 1
Catch the early morning ferry from Dublin then take a leisurely drive southwards to Dover and board the train to pass through the Channel Tunnel. Continue to hotel on the Belgian coast at either Nieuwpoort or Ostend.
DAY 2
Today’s excursion is to Ypres where over one million soldiers on both sides lost their lives in intense and sustained battles between the Germans and the Allied Forces. Visit the Menin Gate, the Cloth Hall and In Flanders Field Museum which tells of the life of soldiers during the Great War. This afternoon, a local guide will join the coach for a drive along the 14-18 Route with stops at Hill 62 - Sanctuary Wood Museum, Hooge Crater Museum and Tyne Cot Cemetery at Passchendaele. After dinner this evening return to Ypres to hear The Last Post being sounded.
DAY 3
Travel through the City of Lille in Northern France to the area of The Somme. See the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge, the village of Beaumont Hamel, Newfoundland Park and the Ulster Tower at Thiepval - the memorial to the soldiers of the 36th (Ulster) Regiment who perished in this area. Also visit the French village of La Boiselle to see the Lochnagar Crater. Return to the hotel for dinner and spend the evening at leisure.
DAY 4
Today take a half day tour to Brussels, Capital of the European Community. After a look around the city, head for a fun-fi lled afternoon at the Bellewaerde Theme Park. Lovers of strong sensations and high-fl ying acrobatics will be thrilled to step on board the breathtaking rides such as The Screaming Eagle and The Boomerang and to experience the high-speed drops of The Beetle Ride!
DAY 5
En route homeward stop at the Belgian Chocolate Factory at De Panne on the French/Belgian border. There will also be an opportunity for further shopping at one of the massive hypermarkets before boarding the shuttle back to England and driving to Holyhead for the 02.00hrs ferry to Dublin.
DAY 6
Arrive Dublin 06.00hrs and transfer back to school.
